Fort Sumter Tours is the authorized concessioner of Fort Sumter National Historical Park, offering the essential Charleston experience – a harbor passage and a self-guided tour of the fort where Confederate forces opened fire on the Union garrison on April 12, 1861, and where America’s bloodiest war began.

Charleston Harbor: A Harbor That Shaped History

Long before Fort Sumter became the flashpoint of the Civil War, Charleston Harbor was the strategic center of the American South. Exported goods grown from inland plantations, such as rice, indigo, and cotton moved through the harbor and made South Carolina the wealthiest of the American colonies. During the American Revolution, the harbor witnessed British occupation from 1780 to 1782 and endured the Siege of Charleston. When Confederate artillery fired on Fort Sumter April 12, 1861, they fired on a harbor that had already witnessed the consequences of war.
